Friday Flowers (Mother’s Day Edition)

My mom and I have always loved white Bleeding Hearts (Dicentra spectabilis Alba), a spring-blooming perennial with delicate, dangling heart-shaped blossoms.  They do well in part sun and flower just in time for Mother’s Day, so I’m planning to give her several for her woodland garden.  If you’re still scratching your head trying to find a gift for your mom (Mother’s Day is May 12th this year), you can order bareroot Dicentra plants from White Flower Farm and have them shipped right to her door.  They will flower year after year around this time, reminding her of you while extending graceful boughs of hearts into the garden.

Planting Note: The leaves of Dicentra die back shortly after flowering, so layer them into a succession planting to fill the gap come summer.

ps- Above, my beautiful and stylish mom who is always an inspiration to me, photographed in the 1970’s on Third Beach by my equally fabulous aunt, Hope.
