Rose Island

After 7 years of living in Newport, I finally caught the ferry out to Rose Island with friends last week.  We arrived to find the island laden with blooming pea vines and nesting sea birds, and we explored in the magic of the rain.  We looked out from the balcony of the lighthouse, peeked into keeper’s quarters, watched tall ships sail past, collected a few of the island’s distinctly orange snail shells, and even found a message in a bottle.  Since its 8 year old sender had only thrown it off the Jamestown ferry the day before, it’s been decided that we’ll wait a bit before responding. Maybe he will even receive his first letter from Greece this fall!
